CAAM Forges Strategic Alliance with Aireon to Deploy Next-Generation Space-Based Surveillance

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and Aireon LLC, a leader in space-based air traffic management, have officially partnered to integrate satellite-derived Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) data across the oceanic air sector of the Kuala Lumpur Flight Information Region (FIR).

This significant undertaking is set to dramatically enhance Malaysia’s air traffic management (ATM) capacity, boosting operational efficiency and safety across one of the world’s most vital international flight paths.

The agreement was formalized in Hong Kong at this week’s Airspace Asia Pacific event, with Aireon acting alongside its local partner, ClearWisdom. The deployment will focus on the Kuala Lumpur FIR West Region, delivering EASA-certified ADS-B data coverage that includes a large expanse of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. This critical area serves as a key connecting corridor for air traffic between Asia and the Middle East.

Elevating Regional ATM Standards

Malaysia serves as a central hub for the safe oversight of this busy air region, bordering the Jakarta (Indonesia), Chennai (India), and Singapore FIRs. This move aligns Malaysia with regional peers, as air navigation service providers (ANSPs) in India and the Philippines have already adopted Aireon’s services, promoting greater regional data consistency and cooperation.

Dato’ Captain Norazman Bin Mahmud, CEO of CAAM, highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration:

“Implementing Aireon’s space-based ADS-B service is a crucial step in strengthening Malaysia’s air traffic surveillance, particularly over the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. This enhancement will foster safer, more efficient airspace operations and strongly supports CAAM’s ongoing drive to modernize our ATM system and advance regional collaboration efforts.”

Peter Cabooter, Aireon Executive Vice President of Customer Affairs, expressed gratitude and confidence:

“We thank CAAM for placing their trust in Aireon to deliver space-based ADS-B data to Malaysia. As air traffic in this region is projected for robust growth, this investment represents Malaysia’s proactive commitment to safety within its airspace.”

Long-Term Vision for Safety and Efficiency

The adoption of space-based ADS-B is integral to CAAM’s long-term strategy to overhaul its surveillance infrastructure. It will provide unparalleled situational awareness for air traffic controllers in remote and oceanic areas where traditional ground-based radar coverage is insufficient. By meeting its obligations under the ICAO Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP), this initiative will enable improved safety outcomes, allow for reduced aircraft separation standards, facilitate more efficient flight routing, and contribute to better environmental performance.
